The best way back into ocean swimming after winter is to start short, swim at patrolled beaches, build up gradually and make it easy to go: keep a bag packed and carry your essentials on you so there's no reason to skip it.
1. Start short
Early-season water can still be cool. Begin with short dips and build up over a few weeks. If you're cold, get out, warm up and try again another day.
2. Swim at patrolled beaches
Lifeguard patrols ramp up through spring. Swim between the red and yellow flags, and ask a lifeguard about conditions if you're unsure.
3. Learn to read the beach again
Sandbanks shift over winter. Look for calm-looking gaps between breaking waves, which can be rips, and avoid them.
4. Find a buddy or a group
Swimming with others is safer and keeps you motivated. Many beaches have morning swim groups.
5. Make it easy to go
- Keep a bag by the door: towel, goggles, sunscreen, a warm top.
- Carry your phone and key on you so you don't have to organise a bag-minder.
Our swim shorts have a hidden waterproof pocket, sealed by magnets and IPX8-rated to 30 metres, so you can walk from the car to the water and back with your phone and key on you.
What we wear
