A zip pocket and a waterproof pocket solve different problems. A zip pocket stops your keys falling out; it doesn't stop water getting in. A waterproof pocket is sealed and rated for submersion, so a phone, cards and cash stay dry while you swim.
If anything electronic is going in the water with you, you need the second one. Here's how to tell them apart when you shop.
What a zip pocket does
Most board shorts have a zip or velcro pocket. It's secure, it's handy for a metal key, and it drains when you get out. But the zip teeth let water straight through, so a phone or key fob will be soaked within seconds of going under.
What a waterproof pocket does
A waterproof pocket is a sealed compartment, tested to keep water out under pressure. The rating to look for is IPX8, which covers continuous submersion beyond one metre. Ours is tested to 30 metres.
Why the type of seal matters
Waterproof zips exist, but they need to be fully closed every time, and sand in the teeth can stop them sealing. Our pocket uses magnets that pull the opening shut the moment you let go, so you can't forget to close it, and there are no teeth for sand to jam. Read more about how the magnetic seal works.

How to spot a real waterproof pocket when shopping
- It states a rating, ideally IPX8, not just “water resistant”.
- It says what depth it's tested to.
- It comes with a warranty on the waterproofing. Ours has a 3-year waterproof warranty.
- It tells you the internal size, so you know your phone fits. Ours is 201 × 140mm.

FAQs
Are zip pocket board shorts waterproof?
No. A standard zip stops items falling out but lets water through.
Can I swim with my phone in a waterproof pocket?
Yes, if it's rated for submersion. Ours is IPX8-rated to 30 metres.
Does sand stop a magnetic pocket from sealing?
There are no zip teeth for sand to jam. Rinse the pocket with fresh water after the beach to keep it in good shape.
